Festival of Northern Lights
2013 FESTIVAL DATES: November 15th 2013 to January 4th 2014.
Thank you to all who joined us on Opening Night, November 15th. It was another huge success. A special thank you to Ann Kelly and family for the throwing of the swtich in honour of Al. It made the entire night even more spectacular. We hope that everyone enjoyed the festivities!
Saturday, November 16th saw a record number of visitors and donations at the Harrison Park Kiosk. We appreciate any and all donations received. The Festival would not be able to continue without your generousity.
There is still plenty of time to see the lights and enjoy the many other activities happening around Owen Sound. Visit our Events Calendar for more information.

Greetings from Festival Chair (2013)
There’s magic in the air for all who choose to visit Owen Sound’s award-winning volunteer-driven Festival of Northern Lights.
Little did Marie and Rob Walpole realize in 1987, when they wanted to brighten downtown’s Sydenham River in winter, that their dream would launch the birth of one of the most spectacular winter displays in the province.
From one city block of wooden displays, made assembly-line fashion in the Walpole home, the Festival of Northern Lights has expanded to include nearly 400 displays, located on both sides of the Sydenham River, in downtown Owen Sound, and extending into beautiful Harrison Park. More than 25 kilometers of tree lights are reflected in the water and in the eyes of children every age who are enraptured with the spectacle that is the Festival of Northern Lights.
Recognizing the need for energy conservation and utility cost savings, LED lights are being increasingly introduced to the festival where possible. As well, 2008′s Festival saw its first solar powered display.
The Festival of Northern Lights is operated by a Advisory Board of members from local community and business, and works in partnership with the City of Owen Sound. Several sub-committees ensure the smooth operation of the Festival with 200 volunteers working diligently to make this event a special time for each visitor.
This year’s festival will open Nov. 15, 2013 and conclude January 4, 2014 with lights on nightly from 5:00-11:00 P.M. We welcome you to let our festival “light-up” the child in you as you take in our winter wonderland of displays!
See you at the Festival of Northern Lights!

Message From the Mayor (2013)
On behalf of City Council and personally, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Festival of Northern Lights!
We are thrilled you have chosen to visit our wonderful City and take in the great outdoor activities. Strolling around the Festival of Northern Lights with family and friends, and a hot chocolate in hand is truly a memorable event.
This year we are excited to see the unveiling of a brand new computer animated nativity scene that spans a stunning 7 feet high and 35 feet wide. There is going to be wonderful music accompanying it for all to enjoy!
To the organizers, volunteers and sponsors, thank you for your enthusiasm and participation. We value our partnership with the Festival of Northern Lights as we continue to work together to promote this great community event.
I encourage everyone to visit our TomThomsonArtGallery, Billy Bishop and MarineMuseums, musical events, the Roxy Theatre, or take in an exciting OHL Attack hockey game during the winter season. Whatever your choice, have fun, and enjoy all that Owen Sound has to offer.
Happy Holidays and I look forward to seeing you ‘around the sound’!
